U.S. President Donald Trump vowed today (Monday) to deliver a crushing defeat to Iran, asserting that it is difficult to bribe the Iranians.
Trump said during a campaign rally in Michigan: “You can’t bribe them. You have to defeat them, and we will deliver a crushing defeat to them, but we will see how things turn out,” adding, “The United States is having very friendly talks with Iran.”
He noted that Iran wants the United States to end the naval blockade.
Earlier today, Trump stated: “We are currently talking to Iran, and if it weren’t for the military operations we carried out, they wouldn’t be talking to us,” pointing out that “Iran has been bombed over the past 14 days and has asked us to stop the bombing and meet for negotiations.”
He added: “I believe there is a chance for talks with Iran, and if that is the case, that’s good; otherwise, we will return to bombing,” indicating that he would use Iran’s frozen funds to compensate for the damage caused by Iranian attacks.
Regarding the Houthi attacks, Trump said: “We dealt with the Houthi problem before and destroyed them thoroughly, and if their problem resurfaces, we may have to intervene again.” Analytical estimates in the press are increasing, confirming that the military options available to the White House in an open confrontation with Iran are now governed by high costs and complex strategic risks.
The British magazine “The Economist” reported that the options available to Washington for carrying out a large-scale attack on Iran appear narrow and limited in effectiveness, explaining that resuming airstrikes on the nuclear program and facilities or expanding the targeting of infrastructure could escalate the conflict and its financial and military costs without guaranteeing the subjugation of Tehran or preventing the confrontation from turning into a long-term war.
The newspaper considered the option of a ground invasion to still be the least likely and most dangerous, given the ongoing Iranian responses and the widening scope of the field confrontation, while the absence of a political horizon enhances the chances of continued intermittent clashes and mutual strikes instead of reaching a final settlement.
