A recent international study has revealed a concerning trend of increasing incidence of several types of cancer among individuals under the age of 50, with notable increases recorded in the United States, England, and the Netherlands over the past two decades, while scientists continue to search for the precise causes behind this phenomenon.

The “World Cancer Research Fund” (WCRF) conducted an analysis of data from 12 types of cancer, including records spanning from 2000 to 2023 in the United States and the Netherlands, and from 2001 to 2023 in England.

The analysis showed statistically significant increases in seven types of early cancer in England, five in the United States, and four in the Netherlands, while researchers confirmed that cancer remains significantly more common among older adults, and that the results do not imply it has become a common disease among the youth.

Colon Cancer Doubles

Among the notable findings recorded in England was the rise in colorectal cancer rates among those under 50, increasing from about 3.9 cases per 100,000 people in 2001 to approximately 8.4 cases in 2023.

Prostate cancer among men under fifty also rose from about one case per 100,000 in 2001 to 3.6 cases in 2023, while rates of kidney and uterine cancer nearly doubled during the same period.

Breast cancer among women under fifty increased from 42 cases per 100,000 in 2001 to 47.5 cases in 2023, and the data also showed increases in liver and pancreatic cancers.

Similar Increases in America and the Netherlands

In the United States, data showed that the rate of kidney cancer among individuals under fifty more than doubled during the analysis period, while colorectal, uterine, and pancreatic cancers recorded significant increases.

In the Netherlands, researchers observed statistically significant increases in colorectal, kidney, liver, and cervical cancers among younger age groups.

Conversely, lung cancer saw a decline among individuals under fifty in all three countries, a trend that coincides with a decrease in smoking over the past decades.

Why Are More Young People Getting Cancer?

Researchers confirmed that the definitive answer to the reasons behind this increase is still unclear, suggesting it may be the result of a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

Among the factors under investigation are rising rates of overweight and obesity, lack of physical activity, diets rich in red and processed meats, fast foods, and sugary drinks, along with decreased fiber consumption.

Scientists are also exploring the role of other factors, including environmental changes, lifestyle patterns, and exposures that begin at early ages, while improvements in detection and diagnosis methods and increased awareness of certain types of cancer may also be part of the explanation for the recorded rise.

The Greatest Risk Remains After 50

The World Cancer Research Fund emphasized that the results should not lead to the belief that cancer has become common among the youth; the majority of cases still occur in individuals over the age of fifty, and age remains one of the most significant risk factors for the disease.

However, researchers believe that the rising rates of certain cancers among younger generations compared to previous generations at the same age warrant further studies, especially to identify modifiable factors that can be targeted for disease prevention.

Dr. Giota Mitrou, the Executive Director of Research and Policy at the World Cancer Research Fund, stated that the current trend is “concerning,” noting that the issue is no longer limited to the known increase in bowel cancer among the youth but includes several other types of cancer.

Researchers hope that the findings will help identify the causes of early onset and develop preventive policies that start at younger ages, rather than treating cancer as a disease exclusively associated with aging.
