سجلت عمليات عبور القناة الإنجليزية إلى بريطانيا رقماً قياسياً جديداً، بعدما وصل 230 مهاجراً إلى الأراضي البريطانية على متن قارب مطاطي واحد، في أكبر عدد من الأشخاص يعبرون القناة في رحلة واحدة منذ بدء تسجيل هذه العمليات.
وغادر القارب، الذي وصفته وسائل إعلام بريطانية بأنه «قارب مطاطي عملاق»، السواحل الفرنسية خلال ساعات الليل، قبل أن يصل إلى ميناء دوفر في وقت مبكر من الصباح، متجاوزاً الرقم القياسي السابق المسجل في يوليو الماضي، عندما تمكن 165 مهاجراً من عبور القناة على متن قارب واحد.
ويعكس استخدام قوارب أكبر اتجاهاً متزايداً لدى شبكات تهريب البشر إلى تقليص عدد الرحلات عبر القناة، مقابل نقل أعداد أكبر من المهاجرين في كل رحلة، في محاولة لتقليل فرص رصد القوارب من السلطات الفرنسية وزيادة العائد المالي للمهربين، رغم المخاطر الكبيرة التي تفرضها هذه الرحلات على حياة المهاجرين.
وتعد القناة الإنجليزية أحد أكثر طرق الهجرة غير النظامية خطورة في أوروبا، بسبب طبيعتها البحرية وكثافة حركة السفن والتيارات القوية، بينما يعتمد المهربون في كثير من الحالات على قوارب مطاطية صغيرة وغير مجهزة للإبحار لمسافات طويلة.
ورغم تسجيل الرقم القياسي الجديد، تشير البيانات المتاحة إلى انخفاض إجمالي أعداد المهاجرين الذين وصلوا إلى بريطانيا عبر القوارب الصغيرة خلال العام الحالي مقارنة بفترات سابقة، إذ بلغ عدد العابرين خلال الفترة من يناير إلى يوليو نحو 14 ألف شخص.
ويأتي ذلك في ظل تعاون متزايد بين بريطانيا وفرنسا للحد من عمليات العبور، من خلال تعزيز الدوريات والمراقبة على السواحل الفرنسية واستهداف شبكات تهريب البشر التي تنظم الرحلات.
ووصف زعيم حزب الإصلاح البريطاني نايجل فاراج الواقعة بأنها «دليل آخر» على ما اعتبره أزمة وطنية مرتبطة بالهجرة غير النظامية، داعياً إلى اتخاذ إجراءات أكثر صرامة لمنع وصول المهاجرين عبر القناة.
في المقابل، قال متحدث باسم وزارة الداخلية البريطانية إن الواقعة تكشف «تكتيكات متهورة» تتبعها عصابات إجرامية تعرض حياة المهاجرين للخطر، مؤكداً أن الحكومة تحرز تقدماً في خفض أعداد العابرين.
وأشار المتحدث إلى أن بريطانيا سجلت في يوليو أدنى عدد من عمليات العبور خلال هذا الشهر منذ عام 2020، لافتاً إلى اتفاق جديد مع فرنسا يقضي بزيادة الوجود الأمني على الشواطئ الفرنسية بنسبة 40%، ضمن استراتيجية بريطانية تقوم على ربط التمويل بالنتائج في مواجهة الهجرة غير النظامية وعمليات تهريب البشر.
Crossings of the English Channel to Britain have recorded a new record, with 230 migrants reaching British shores on a single inflatable boat, the largest number of people to cross the channel in one trip since these operations began being recorded.
The boat, described by British media as a “giant inflatable boat,” left the French coast during the night before arriving at the port of Dover early in the morning, surpassing the previous record set last July when 165 migrants managed to cross the channel on a single boat.
The use of larger boats reflects an increasing trend among human smuggling networks to reduce the number of trips across the channel, while transporting larger numbers of migrants on each trip, in an attempt to decrease the chances of the boats being spotted by French authorities and increase the financial returns for smugglers, despite the significant risks these journeys pose to the lives of migrants.
The English Channel is considered one of the most dangerous routes for irregular migration in Europe, due to its maritime nature and the density of ship traffic and strong currents, while smugglers often rely on small, inadequately equipped inflatable boats for long-distance sailing.
Despite the new record, available data indicates a decrease in the total number of migrants who reached Britain via small boats this year compared to previous periods, with around 14,000 crossings recorded from January to July.
This comes amid increasing cooperation between Britain and France to curb crossings, through enhanced patrols and surveillance on the French coasts and targeting the human smuggling networks that organize the trips.
British Reform Party leader Nigel Farage described the incident as “another piece of evidence” of what he considers a national crisis related to irregular migration, calling for stricter measures to prevent migrants from reaching via the channel.
In contrast, a spokesperson for the British Home Office stated that the incident reveals “reckless tactics” employed by criminal gangs that endanger the lives of migrants, affirming that the government is making progress in reducing the number of crossings.
The spokesperson noted that Britain recorded the lowest number of crossings in July for that month since 2020, pointing to a new agreement with France to increase security presence on French shores by 40%, as part of a British strategy that links funding to results in tackling irregular migration and human smuggling operations.
