نجحت طواقم الدفاع المدني بجنوب لوس أنجلوس في نزع فتيل كارثة كيميائية وشيكة، بعد إعلانها «القضاء تماماً» على خطر انفجار خزان ضخم للمواد الكيميائية، كان يهدد باجتياح مناطق مأهولة بالسكان في ولاية كاليفورنيا بأبخرة سامة وقاتلة.
وفي كلمة مصورة نقلتها وكالة «فرانس برس»، أكد رئيس قسم الدفاع المدني المحلي تي جاي ماكغفرن زوال خطر الانفجار الفوري، لكنه وجه تحذيراً صارماً لنحو 50 ألف مواطن طُلب منهم مغادرة منازلهم، قائلاً: «يرجى احترام مناطق الإخلاء؛ فالتهديد الذي يمس السلامة العامة لا يزال قائماً»، في إشارة إلى استمرار حظر عودة النازحين حتى تأمين المنطقة بالكامل.

حبست مقاطعة «أورانج» أنفاسها منذ يوم الجمعة الماضي، عندما تحول خزان يضم نحو 26 ألف لتر من مادة «ميثيل ميثاكريلات» -وهي سائل شديد الاشتعال يدخل في صناعات البلاستيك- إلى قنبلة موقوتة تهدد الأحياء السكنية في مدينة «غاردن غروف».
ورغم تأكيد المسؤول في الدفاع المدني كريغ كوفي وجود صدع في جسم الخزان، إلا أنه زفّ مؤشرات طمأنينة تعكس انكسار حدة الأزمة، مشيراً إلى حدوث انخفاض ملحوظ في الضغط الداخلي، بالتزامن مع تراجع درجات الحرارة من 38 إلى 34 درجة مئوية، مضيفاً: «هذا خبر إيجابي للغاية، ويؤكد أن الحادثة تتخذ منحى انفراجياً جديداً».
استنفار بيئي لمنع الكارثة
وحتى اللحظة، لم تسجل السلطات أي إصابات بشرية جراء الحادثة التي بدأت شرارتها الأولى يوم الخميس الماضي، فيما التزمت الصمت بشأن الأسباب الفنية وراء الواقعة.
وكان مدير وكالة حماية البيئة الأمريكية لي زيلدين قد توقع في تصريحات سبقت الانفراجة أن السيناريو الأرجح يتمثل في «تسرب كمية ضئيلة من المادة السامة، بمقدور السلطات المحلية رصدها وتحييدها واحتوائها».
وعلى مدار الساعات الماضية، خاضت فرق الطوارئ سباقاً مع الزمن لوضع حواجز وقائية ومصدات بيئية محكمة، لضمان عدم تسرب أي من هذه المواد السامة إلى المجاري المائية، ومنع وصول التلوث إلى المحيط الذي يقع على بعد كيلومترات قليلة من موقع الحادثة.
The civil defense teams in South Los Angeles successfully defused an imminent chemical disaster, after declaring that they had “completely eliminated” the risk of an explosion from a massive chemical tank that threatened to inundate populated areas in California with toxic and deadly fumes.
In a video statement broadcast by the French Press Agency, local civil defense chief T.J. McGovern confirmed that the immediate explosion threat had been removed, but he issued a stern warning to about 50,000 citizens who were asked to evacuate their homes, saying: “Please respect the evacuation zones; the threat to public safety still exists,” referring to the ongoing ban on the return of evacuees until the area is fully secured.

Orange County held its breath since last Friday when a tank containing about 26,000 liters of methyl methacrylate—a highly flammable liquid used in plastic manufacturing—turned into a ticking time bomb threatening residential neighborhoods in Garden Grove.
Despite civil defense official Craig Coffey confirming a crack in the tank’s body, he provided reassuring indicators reflecting a de-escalation of the crisis, noting a significant drop in internal pressure, coinciding with a decrease in temperatures from 38 to 34 degrees Celsius, adding: “This is very positive news and confirms that the incident is taking a new turn towards resolution.”
Environmental Mobilization to Prevent Disaster
So far, authorities have reported no human injuries resulting from the incident that began last Thursday, while remaining silent about the technical reasons behind the occurrence.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin had predicted in statements prior to the breakthrough that the most likely scenario would involve “a small leak of the toxic substance, which local authorities could detect, neutralize, and contain.”
Over the past hours, emergency teams raced against time to set up secure barriers and environmental buffers to ensure that none of these toxic materials leaked into waterways and to prevent contamination from reaching the ocean, which is just a few kilometers from the incident site.
