The Israeli army is preparing to establish a new brigade specialized in space, under the Planning Directorate, in a move aimed at expanding its military capabilities in this field and enhancing the use of space technologies in surveillance and reconnaissance operations, alongside developing capabilities related to future space wars.

According to the Israeli website “Ynet,” the brigade is expected to be established in the coming months to coordinate the development of military space capabilities and their operational employment, including orbital surveillance systems and technologies that can support military operations in the coming years.

The announcement of the decision came after a meeting of senior military officials held on (Monday), chaired by Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, as part of a broader trend to reorganize and develop military capabilities within the framework of the multi-year military program known as “Hoshin.”

A Specialized Unit for Developing Space Capabilities

According to the report, a brigadier general in the Israeli army, whose full name has not been disclosed, has been chosen to lead the new brigade, while two officers with the rank of lieutenant colonel, referred to by the letters “N” and “S,” have been selected to head two departments within it, with their promotion to the rank of colonel.

The appointments still require the approval of Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.

The brigade will operate under the Planning Directorate as a specialized organizational unit that differs from traditional combat brigades, as it will focus on combining technological development with operational needs and long-term military planning.

It will also coordinate military space projects, supervise specialized vocational training, and work to establish space operations as an independent field of military expertise within the Israeli army.

From Earth Surveillance to Military Space Operations

The decision reflects, according to the Israeli army, an increasing assessment of the importance of space as an evolving area of military conflict, with expectations of its growing role in wars in the coming years.

The report noted that the Israeli army made progress over the past year in several projects related to this field, including operating space sensors for Earth surveillance and developing capabilities related to space wars.

The establishment of the brigade aims to bring these activities and projects under a single organizational umbrella, allowing for the coordination of efforts and the development of expertise and resources allocated to this sector.

However, the Israeli army did not disclose the capabilities that will be operational upon the establishment of the brigade, nor did it set a timeline for the development of all the systems that the military institution aspires to possess in the future.

Katz: We Aim to Transform Israel into a Military Space Power

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed the decision to establish the brigade on (Tuesday), considering it a fundamental step within a policy aimed at transforming Israel into one of the leading countries globally in the field of military space capabilities.

Katz stated that the project falls under a vision he described as “Israeli Star Wars,” referring to the ambition to expand Israel’s military presence in space.

He added that the declared goal of the military institution and the defense system is to make Israel one of the leading countries in military space capabilities.

The vision proposed by the minister goes beyond the traditional uses of satellites for intelligence gathering and surveillance, to include the development of defensive and offensive capabilities that could be used in future military operations launched from space.

Katz noted that the ability to monitor, protect, and strike targets over vast distances from space, according to his vision for the future, could enhance Israel’s regional and international standing and deter its adversaries.

Potential Economic Gains for the Technology Sector

According to statements by the Israeli Defense Minister, the project’s goals are not limited to the military aspect, as Katz pointed out that investment in defensive space technologies could support the technology, innovation, and advanced industries sector in Israel.

The minister believes that developing these technologies could enhance opportunities for startups and industrial activities related to space, with the potential to benefit from innovations arising within the defense institution in developing civilian applications.

The establishment of a specialized brigade, according to the announced vision, would provide an organizational framework that brings together the necessary projects, personnel, and expertise to develop these capabilities, at a time when international military interest in space technologies is increasing.

A Brigade for Robotics and the Return of an Armored Formation After 23 Years

In the context of military restructuring, the Israeli army approved during the same meeting the establishment of a specialized brigade in robotics within the Depth Command, and a brigadier general, whose full name has not been disclosed and is referred to by the letter “Y,” was chosen to lead the new unit.

The brigade is set to coordinate military activities related to robotics and develop technological capabilities in this field, with the participation of other officers who will supervise its departments.

It was also decided to re-establish the 500th armored brigade, which was dissolved in 2003, after a hiatus of 23 years. A lieutenant colonel, referred to by the letter “R,” was chosen to lead the armored formation upon its re-establishment, with a promotion to the rank of colonel.

The meeting also witnessed the completion of dozens of appointments in senior military positions within regional commands, operational units, and headquarters.

The appointments included selecting Lieutenant Colonel Michal Levshitz to head the Mental Health Department, and Colonel Eli Livertov as Deputy Military Prosecutor.

New military attachés were also appointed in Poland, Germany, Finland, France, Britain, and Belgium, along with a new attaché for ground forces in Washington.

All of these appointments are still subject to the approval of the Israeli Defense Minister, according to the report.

The establishment of the space brigade, the robotics brigade, and the reformation of the armored brigade comes as part of a series of organizational changes aimed at developing the Israeli military structure, with an increased focus on advanced technologies and capabilities that may influence the nature of military operations in the future.
