أثار وزير الصحة الأمريكي روبرت إف كينيدي جونيور موجة واسعة من الجدل بعد تداول مقطع فيديو ظهر فيه وهو يلتقط ثعبانين بيديه العاريتين داخل منزل زميله الدكتور محمد أوز في ولاية فلوريدا، وسط تحذيرات رسمية من الاقتراب من الأفاعي أو محاولة الإمساك بها.
ونشر كينيدي المقطع عبر حسابه، موضحاً أنه كان يزيل «ثعباني بلاك ريسر» من فناء منزل الدكتور أوز المطل على الشاطئ في فلوريدا، فيما ظهرت زوجته الممثلة شيريل هاينز وهي تشجعه أثناء الإمساك بالثعبانين.
ثعابين تتحرك ولدغات أمام الكاميرا
وأظهر الفيديو كينيدي وهو يقترب من الثعبانين مرتدياً قميصاً وبنطالاً وجوارب دون حذاء، قبل أن ينحني ويلتقطهما بيديه وسط صيحات تحذير من الحاضرين، إذ سُمعت امرأة تقول: «بوبي.. من فضلك».
وبدا الوزير الأمريكي مبتسماً أمام الكاميرا وهو يرفع الثعبانين، رغم أن أحدهما بدا وكأنه يعض يده خلال التصوير.
السلطات الأمريكية: لا تقتربوا من الأفاعي
وبحسب هيئة المتنزهات الوطنية الأمريكية، فإن ثعابين «بلاك ريسر» غير سامة ولا تشكل خطراً على البشر إذا تُركت دون إزعاج.
لكن لجنة فلوريدا للحياة البرية وحماية الأسماك حذّرت أخيراً السكان من الاقتراب من الأفاعي مع زيادة نشاطها خلال فصل الربيع، مؤكدة أن حتى الثعابين غير السامة قد تتسبب بعضّات مؤلمة.
وقالت الهيئة في منشور توعوي: «اتركوا مساحة آمنة بينكم وبين الأفاعي، واستمتعوا بمشاهدتها من بعيد، ولا تحاولوا حملها».
سجل مثير للجدل مع الحيوانات
ويُعد هذا المقطع أحدث فصول العلاقة المثيرة للجدل بين كينيدي وعالم الحيوانات، إذ سبق أن واجه أسئلة داخل الكونغرس الأمريكي بشأن تقارير تحدثت عن قيامه بقطع عضو راكون نافق على الطريق بغرض دراسته لاحقاً.
كما تعرّض قبل عامين لانتقادات واسعة من ناشطين بيئيين بعد مزاعم أفادت بأنه استخدم منشاراً كهربائياً لفصل رأس حوت نافق جرفته الأمواج، قبل نقله فوق سقف سيارته إلى منزله.
American Health Minister Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparked a wide wave of controversy after a video circulated showing him handling two snakes with his bare hands inside the home of his colleague Dr. Mehmet Oz in Florida, amid official warnings against approaching or attempting to catch snakes.
Kennedy posted the clip on his account, explaining that he was removing “black racer snakes” from Dr. Oz’s beachside yard in Florida, while his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, was seen encouraging him as he handled the snakes.
Snakes moving and bites in front of the camera
The video showed Kennedy approaching the two snakes wearing a shirt, pants, and socks without shoes, before he bent down and picked them up with his hands amidst warnings from those present, as a woman was heard saying, “Bobby… please.”
The American minister appeared smiling in front of the camera as he lifted the two snakes, even though one of them seemed to be biting his hand during the filming.
U.S. Authorities: Do not approach snakes
According to the U.S. National Park Service, “black racer” snakes are non-venomous and pose no threat to humans if left undisturbed.
However, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recently warned residents against approaching snakes as their activity increases during the spring, emphasizing that even non-venomous snakes can cause painful bites.
The agency stated in an awareness post: “Keep a safe distance between you and the snakes, enjoy watching them from afar, and do not attempt to handle them.”
Controversial record with animals
This clip is the latest chapter in the controversial relationship between Kennedy and the animal world, as he previously faced questions in the U.S. Congress regarding reports that he had cut off a raccoon’s limb found on the road for later study.
He also faced widespread criticism from environmental activists two years ago after allegations emerged that he used a chainsaw to sever the head of a dead whale washed ashore, before transporting it on the roof of his car to his home.
