Washington: US President Donald Trump said he will order American forces to suspend new military strikes against Iran after what he described as the emergence of parameters for a potential agreement aimed at ending the five-month conflict.

In a social media post on Saturday, Trump said the proposed deal would include the “immediate, complete and total” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.

“Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the world and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a deal,” Trump said.

He added that Israel had agreed to join the United States in efforts to finalise an agreement with Iran that could bring the conflict to an end.

There was no immediate public response from Iran to Trump’s announcement.

The statement marked a significant shift from remarks made a day earlier, when Trump suggested the United States was close to resuming major military strikes to pressure Tehran into negotiations.

The US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on 28th February, with Trump stating that the objective was to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon and end its support for allied armed groups. Since then, the stated goals and timelines of the conflict have shifted repeatedly, and an earlier agreement reached in June collapsed within weeks.

Meanwhile, the US State Department issued security alerts urging American citizens across the region to prepare for possible travel disruptions, including flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures.
