The police wing of the State Human Rights Commission on Tuesday raided two police inspectors attached to RMC Yard Police Station and Kothanur Police Station after they were allegedly found illegally detaining two persons, including a city-based jeweller, without registering FIRs and demanding money and gold for their release.
Officials of the Human Rights Commission, led by Dy. SP Ashanthnarayana conducted surprise raids on both police stations around 3 p.m. on Tuesday and allegedly found the victims in unlawful custody.
According to officials, the inspector of the RMC Yard Police Station had allegedly detained Rajesh Kumar Mehta for two days without registering an FIR. Mehta was reportedly picked up based on the statement of a house-break theft accused, who allegedly told police that he had sold stolen valuables to Mehta.
However, Mehta reportedly denied knowing the accused or purchasing any stolen gold and even offered CCTV footage to establish his innocence. Despite this, the police allegedly insisted that he hand over one kilogram of gold.
In a separate incident, the inspector of Kothanur Police Station allegedly detained Fardeen Pasha, an employee of a private firm, for nearly three days without any complaint or FIR under the pretext of an inquiry. The police allegedly demanded ₹5 lakh for his release.
Both victims were later rescued, subjected to medical examination, and their statements were recorded by Human Rights Commission officials.
Cases have reportedly been initiated against both inspectors on charges related to illegal detention, misuse of power, and human rights violations. The officials said the two inspectors could face arrest following further inquiry.
