The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced today (Friday) that South African judge and human rights activist Navi Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2026, in recognition of her efforts to promote international law and combat impunity for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Pillay is considered one of the leading figures in the field of international justice and human rights, having served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She has also worked as a judge in the Supreme Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Court, and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which she presided over from 1999 to 2003.
The prize, valued at 12 million Swedish kronor, is scheduled to be awarded in the Norwegian capital Oslo on December 10.
Pillay was born in 1941 in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Tamil Indian descent, and grew up under the apartheid regime. She began her legal career defending anti-apartheid activists, becoming in 1967 the first woman to open a law office in the Natal province of South Africa, and she was also the first black woman to serve as a judge in her country’s Supreme Court.
In 1995, she joined the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she contributed to cases that set important precedents in international law, including the case of Jean-Paul Akayesu, which established an international legal precedent recognizing rape as an act that may constitute genocide, in addition to being a crime against humanity.
She also served as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague from 2003 to 2008, before taking on the role of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, where she worked to enhance the protection of human rights and combat discrimination at the international level. She also contributed to the founding of the organization “Equality Now,” which focuses on women’s rights and equality.
