British media reported the death of former novelist and politician Jeffrey Archer at the age of 86, marking the loss of one of the most prominent writers of popular literature in Britain after a career that spanned decades and achieved widespread global recognition.
Archer was one of the best-selling British authors, with sales of his works exceeding 300 million copies worldwide. He was known for his smooth narrative style and ability to construct thrilling plots, making him a constant name on best-seller lists.
Born in London in 1940, Archer later held the title of “Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare.” He served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party from 1969 to 1974, before taking on prominent roles within the party, most notably as Deputy Chairman in the mid-1980s. He was granted the title of Baron in 1992, becoming a member of the House of Lords.
His latest novel (Adam & Eve) was scheduled to be released this month; it is a work set during World War II, telling the story of two children born on the same day but belonging to vastly different social worlds.
In literary terms, Archer wrote novels, short stories, and plays, with some of his most famous works including (Kane and Abel), (Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less), (Best Kept Secret), (Only Time Will Tell), and the series (Clifton Chronicles) and (William Warwick), which solidified his status as one of the pillars of contemporary fiction.
Despite his significant literary success, Archer faced a legal crisis in 2001 after being convicted of perjury and obstructing justice in an old libel case, resulting in a four-year prison sentence, of which he served about two years before being released in 2003. This event impacted his political career but did not halt his literary output.
It is worth noting that Archer was married to scientist Mary Archer, and they had two children.
