– I was present in the beloved land of Egypt when the earthquake occurred yesterday, which was very noticeable as its magnitude reached 5.7 on the Richter scale.
– Everything was calm in Cairo, the city of a thousand minarets, until suddenly the sounds rose, and the sleepers woke up to the movement of their homes. For the first time in my life, I witnessed an earthquake and saw how the building swayed back and forth! People rushed out of their homes into the streets, afraid of aftershocks… Where do we go and hide from this violent earthquake that jolted me awake? Glory be to You, my Lord, how great You are when You shake the earth and move everyone on it!
– I looked out at the street from my window and saw people wandering, scared and terrified from this earthquake that woke them up, fearing that buildings would collapse on their heads and cause a humanitarian disaster. Were it not for God’s mercy, and had the tremor been stronger, a great tragedy would have occurred, but God’s kindness and greatness are above all.
– Earthquakes awaken us from our sleep and negligence, reminding us that everything can end in an instant, and that God’s power and mercy are always the saviors from disasters in which humans have no strength or power.
– In the first moments of shaking, all social and material differences between people fade away. Under the weight of the shock, everyone is equal in a single instinctive feeling: helplessness and the search for safety. In those seconds, the dividing lines between the rich and the poor are erased, future calculations are canceled, and life itself shrinks to the search for an exit or a warm embrace for protection.
– Human fear is manifested in its purest forms, confirming to us how fragile we are as beings living on a constantly changing planet.
– Earthquakes remind us of the fragility of our material world, but at the same time, they remind us of the strength of human connections. They are harsh lessons that speak to the world’s conscience, affirming that the value of a human lies in their ability to empathize and stand by their fellow human when the ground shakes beneath them.
